How to Improve Balance & Coordination with Physical Therapy

Have you been feeling a little unsteady lately? Maybe you’ve noticed it takes more effort to climb stairs, or that you hesitate when walking across uneven ground. These small changes can be early signs that your balance and coordination need attention.

At Bay Area Physical Therapy, we work with people every day who are dealing with balance issues, whether from injuries, age-related changes, or medical conditions. The good news is that physical therapy can help you rebuild your confidence to move freely and safely. Let’s take a closer look at what causes balance problems and how we can help restore your stability and ease of movement.

What Causes Balance and Coordination Problems?

Balance and coordination are controlled by a complex system involving your muscles, joints, eyes, inner ear, and nervous system. When something disrupts this system, you may start to feel unsteady or off-balance. Common causes of balance and coordination problems include:

  • Age: As we age, muscle strength and flexibility can decline, which increases the risk of falls and balance-related issues.
  • Neurological Conditions: Conditions like Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, or a stroke can disrupt signals between the brain and body, which can affect coordination.
  • Vestibular Disorders: The inner ear plays a key role in balance. Disorders like vertigo or Meniere’s Disease can cause dizziness, spinning sensations, and instability.
  • Post-Injury Changes: After an injury (especially to a joint like the ankle, knee, or hip), your body may compensate in ways that throw off your natural balance.
  • Medications: Some prescriptions can affect your central nervous system, blood pressure, or reaction time and increase your risk of falling. Also too many medications can cause small interactions with each other that can affect your risk of falling.  Usually more than 3 is a risk factor.
  • Blood Pressure Issues: Both high and low blood pressure can cause lightheadedness or dizziness, especially when changing positions quickly.
  • Dehydration: Not drinking enough water can affect blood pressure and make you feel lightheaded especially in warm weather.  Try to drink half your body weight in ounces of water each day!

Signs You May Have a Balance Issue

If you’re unsure whether your balance is something to be concerned about, here are some common signs that it might be time to reach out to a physical therapist for support:

  • Frequent tripping or falling
  • Feeling unsteady while walking
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Fear of walking or falling
  • Trouble climbing stairs
  • Needing to pull yourself up stairs by the handrail
  • Feeling off-balance when turning your head or changing directions quickly

How PT Helps Restore Balance and Coordination

At Bay Area Physical Therapy, we take a bottom-up approach to restoring balance and coordination. Our goal is to get to the root cause of your challenges through advanced diagnostics and address it using proven therapy techniques.

Depending on your needs, we may use one or more of the following treatment methods:

Strength-Building Exercises

We focus on improving the strength of the muscles that stabilize your core, hips, and legs. When these muscles are weak, it’s harder for your body to react quickly or support itself properly. Exercises may include controlled body-weight movements and resistance training to enhance your stability and reduce fall risk.

Balance Training Exercises

Balance is a skill that can be retrained. We use a series of progressively challenging exercises that start small and build up to more dynamic tasks like walking on uneven surfaces or reaching in different directions. This helps your brain and body relearn how to respond to small shifts in movement.

Vestibular Rehabilitation

If your balance problems are related to dizziness, vertigo, or inner ear dysfunction, vestibular rehab can be highly effective. This is a specialized treatment that we can do to help alleviate your vertigo symptoms in a safe and controlled way. With time, many patients experience a significant reduction in dizziness and improved ability to move without feeling off-balance.
